In fact, the town is surrounded by numerous archaeological sites dating back to between the 7th and 2nd centuries BC. In the 16th century, it became the refuge for a large number of Jews who were forced to flee from the Papal State. They established a large community that still exists today and that over the centuries has earned the nickname “Little Jerusalem” in Pitigliano.
Today, Pitigliano is the largest town in the territory. It is also the reference point for all matters related to the social, economic and administrative management of the Tufi area. The best place to start when visiting the town is the sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie. From there, visitors can enjoy a sensational view of the whole urban complex and the tufa rock beneath it. A walk through the historic centre should definitely include the defensive fortifications, the Medici Aqueduct, Palazzo Orsini, the Cathedral, the Church of San Rocco, the “Capisotto” district, the Jewish Quarter and the Synagogue.
