Parco naturale della maremma

05.05.2021

The park covers approximately 9800 hectares, from Principina a Mare to Talamone. Visitors can can choose a variety of routes depending on the duration, season and difficulty of the tour. The Visitors' Centre has headquarters in Alberese, offering many individual tours, group tours or guided tours, on horseback, in canoes, in a carriage, by bicycle, by night, and also birdwatching. From a naturalistic point of view, most of the park is taken up by the Uccellina Mountains, parallel to the coast and covered by dense Mediterranean vegetation. To the north are wetlands characterized by marshy areas generated by the mouth of the Ombrone River. The coastal stretch is instead made up of a series of sandy shores.

Thanks to its geographical location, the Park, in the migration season, is the chosen destination for many types of birds and a natural habitat for horses, cattle, rabbits, hedgehogs, foxes, badgers, porcupines, wild boars, roe deer, fallow deer, martens, weasels, skunks and wild rabbits. Despite being covered in dense vegetation, there are numerous archaeological sites, both Etruscan-Roman and medieval, in the Maremma Park. Well worth visiting is the recently restored 12th-century Abbey of San Rabano, built by the Benedictine monks to try to make harsh surrounding land more productive. Nearby is the Uccellina Tower, built in the 1300s as a watchtower over the open sea and for the protection of the nearby religious complex. Inside the park you can find other numerous watch towers, built to prevent attacks by Saracen pirates who infested the Tyrrhenian coast.
