The quality of the sea, beaches, environmental attention and services make it an exclusive Tuscan destination. In addition to the wonderful sea, it is renowned for important Etruscan-Roman archaeological sites and medieval architectural jewels, like the Castle surrounded by fortified walls overlooking the sea.
Nearby is the Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve, a protected natural area of marshes covering over a thousand hectares of land. Considered to be the most important Italian wetland, its origin dates back to the ancient Prile Lake, which was dried up during the great works to reclaim the Maremma. Diaccia Botrona is very important for the large variety of living organisms, both plant and animal. The evocative Casa Rossa Ximenes is located inside. It was built in 1765 for storing the drives and the cataract mechanisms that were used to control the emissions of lake waters. It now houses a Multimedia Museum with various observation points of the reserve, a more unique and rare opportunity to observe wildlife without disturbing the ecosystem. During the summer, boat tours, and a festival of music, theatre and traditional events is organized and the Nature reserve becomes a truly fascinating natural setting.
