Come back

The archaeological area of Roselle is located about 10 km north of Grosseto, along the state motorway leading from the Maremma capital to Siena.

There is a visitors’ pathway within the Area (about 2 km long), and with the help of free information material (teaching cards in multiple languages) it is possible to visit the remains of the city.

Situated in a particularly interesting location, on two hills (North and South) connected by a small valley, Roselle dominated the south-east side of the Prile “lake”, a natural body of water linking the sea and the coastal towns, while the Ombrone River, near whose mouth the city was situated, made it possible to trade with the Val d'Orcia and the inner cities of Etruria.

Although there are traces of prehistoric and proto-historic inhabitation, Roselle became organically inhabited by the first half of the 7th century BC, as confirmed by the remains of important terracing walls with raised sections in mudbrick in the area of the North hill and of the “building with wall" recently interpreted as a place of worship and seat of power, located in the valley between the two hills.
