The sea of Argentario and coastal localities
Mount Argentario is a very interesting maritime area in the heart of Tuscany. The villages surrounding it have a wealth of historical and cultural traditions, but also some outstanding natural features. The first stop on the Argentario journey is Orbetello, a city that boasts Etruscan origins and was very important in Roman times.
In fact, its geographic position was well protected on one side by the lagoon and on the other by Mount Argentario, which made the place safe from pirates. Today, Orbetello still retains its urban fabric and during the visit you can admire the remains of the Etruscan walls. Continuing on the tour, you come to Porto Ercole where the impressive Spanish fortresses of Forte Stella and Forte Filippo are located, while the village is dominated by the mighty Rocca or fortress. Continuing on, you come to Porto Santo Stefano with its houses perched along the hills that slope down to the sea, a setting that is both ancient and modern. Finally, we suggest a stop in Talamone to admire the imposing fortress that Italian history immortalized with Giuseppe Garibaldi’s famous Expedition of the Thousand.
